Before I go on my rant, I have to say that I am a die hard Apple fan. I own many things Mac. I even think the whole ad campaign with the hip Apple guy and the square PC guy is brilliant.
Here is a new commercial in the Mac vs. PC campaign featuring supermodel Gisele Bundchen for Apple Macs.
I get that Apple and their ad agency didn't want to cast an "ugly" girl next to Gisele because that would have just opened a can of whoop ass, so the man in drag angle was their compromise. Still, I think the ad is mean-spirited and elitist because it's portraying Macs as pretty perfection, and the competition as a freakish joke. This is too much of a stretch.
If I was in charge of doing this commercial and had to use Gisele, this is what I would have done:
Gisele comes in on Mac's side, and starts to do her supermodel pose thing while a photographer snaps pictures. There would be some hip music playing in the background.
PC guy would turn to Apple guy [in obvious envy] and say,"Who's that?"
Mac guy replies, "Oh, I get to design fashion ads and commercials because the fashionistas love Macs."
Then on the PC guy's side, a nerdy accountant comes in.
Mac guy would turn to PC guy and offer back, "So, who's that?"
PC guy would smile in a forced excited way and say, "Oh, that's the accountant. We're going to go have some fun crunching numbers."
Apple guy says, "Oh yeah, that sounds like fun. [he waves at accountant] You two have a blast."
Apple guy turns back towards Gisele and starts dancing.
So, Gisele can do what she's famous for, and you get across the whole hip and style forward message without making someone else seem freakish, boring yes, but not less than because they are not as pretty.
