Allison's story:
I realized I
was bigger than everyone else when I was seven, at eight (and every year after
that) I wrote in my journal that I needed to go on a diet so that I could be
skinny. I don’t remember writing that in my eight year old journal, but really,
no eight year old should have to feel like that.
At nine my parents separated, and I turned to food for comfort, although I didn’t realize I was using it as a coping mechanism at the time. That was pretty much the start of my binge eating. When my mind told my mouth that it wanted to eat something…my entire being became focused on stuffing my face. I couldn't stop...
I couldn’t/didn’t stop and say to myself “self you aren’t actually hungry, you are bored, thirsty, sad, happy etc.” All I could do was eat, generally junk, and eat a lot of it.
In college the guy I was seeing told me he thought I had an eating disorder, and told me to go to the counseling center. I went, mostly because I liked him, not because I was willing to see a counselor for help. I didn’t go back, but I did realize that I had an eating disorder.
Everything didn’t turn “perfect” in one day, but it did get better. I rarely have binges now, and I’ve learned what triggers them and how to deal with it. Today I weigh 239 pounds. When I started this journey, I weighed 262. For the past 6 months I’ve been learning how to eat healthily, exercising five days a week, and generally loving life!
