Are you surprised Oprah had the pregnant man on her show?

A pregnant man on Oprah's show was definitely an eye catcher. Thomas is able to be pregnant because he was born female but during his transformation to becoming a man he opted to keep his reproductive organs in tact because of a desire to one day have a child.

If you missed the show, you can watch it here. Below, is the part where Thomas' doctor speaks about the medical side of the pregnancy. Nine doctors had rejected to help Thomas and Nancy because of their "uncomfortableness", but Dr. Kimberly James said yes, and what a true healer. She is able to focus on the patient and his health versus caring what other people would think.

After watching the show, I came away with two things. First, Thomas and Nancy look truly in love and highly committed to each other, and second, I applaud and admire them for their courage to truly be themselves in the face of enormous controversy, judgment, and societal pressure.

I congratulate their happiness but you know this is going to be a very tough journey for them and their child because people can be really close minded and mean. Nancy's adult daughters from a previous marriage  struck me as really loving and supportive people. I agree with Thomas in that love is what makes a family.

Initially, I was surprised Oprah was doing the story because the advertising of it sounded like sensational tabloid stuff which Oprah doesn't typically do. But after watching the show, I could see why she had them on, and I think for Thomas and Nancy it was fortunate that they could tell their story to the world on a well respected and open minded show. But, I'm curious, where any of you surprised with Oprah doing this show?
