We're going to take a moment to stop thinking about ourselves, and draw our attention to helping others.
On Friday, Bono and Bobby Shriver, joined Oprah on her show for the official U.S. launch of JoinRed. (RED) is not a charity. (Red) is a business model where proceeds from cool products we would normally buy as consumers will go directly to The Global Fund which helps women and children in Africa suffering from AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
The consumer brands that are involved in (RED) so far include: The Gap, Apple, Motorola, Giorgio Armani, American Express, and Converse. Whenever you buy a (RED) branded product from one of these companies, proceeds will go to The Global Fund.
When you have someone like Bono behind a cause, big things happen. Apple has a specially designed red Nano, Motorola has a red RAZR cell, The Gap has an amazing photo campaign starring some serious A-list celebrities wearing their (RED) line, Gisele Bundchen is partnered with American Express, Armani has the "Bono" glasses plus some cool clothes, and Converse has sneaks with patterns made in Africa. This Christmas is definitely going to be a big (RED) one.
This is one of the largest marketing campaigns I have ever seen for anything. All the glitz and marketing is a bit overwhelming, but you know what, if we're going to buy a t-shirt, an iPod, sneakers, or jeans why not buy something that is going to help someone else in the world that is far less fortunate than we are. We live in the most abundant country in the world, so let's share the prosperity and help those who need aid.
There is a JoinRed blog, and (RED) photos on Flickr of news clippings and pictures of Bono on his travels through Africa. Here is a clip from Oprah's show with Alicia Keys and Bono singing their duet for the first time together live of "Don't Give up Africa." It really was touching to hear these two sing. What talent! You can download the song at the Sony Music Store. All proceeds from the song will go to the Keep
A Child Alive organization.
Update: Our friend Valeria over at Conversation Agent has a great post on (RED). Check it out.
