The very fist thing every well intentioned weight loss program is going to tell you is, "See your doctor or a medical professional before starting any weight loss program." Most of us think, "Well, of course they are saying that to C.Y.A." Many of us have gone right ahead and started dropping weight without going to our doctor because our logic tends to be, "What harm could I do by cutting back calories and exercising? I don't need a doctor to help me with that."
Yes, we don't need a medical professional to tell us how to cut calories and exercise, but losing weight is not a one size fits all deal, and the process of losing weight can affect you in ways that you may not be aware of especially if you have other physical issues going on, illnesses, or are on any prescribed or even over the counter medications. If you have been stuck on a plateau for ages when you've tried everything on earth, then there might be something going on in your body like hormones, medication side affects, or allergies. If you decide to take the route of diet pills, you should definitely be informing your doctor or medical professional like a nurse practitioner or Naturopathic doctor.
What are some of the benefits of consulting a doctor during your weight loss program:
- You stay healthy and informed. You could be doing things with well intentions that actually may be hurting your body or be even sabotaging your weight loss efforts that you are not aware of. Only your doctor can help you stay on a healthy track.
- Your body is a temple, therefore you should have the very best in treatment which means having professionally educated and trained people to help you keep the temple in tip top shape. Think of your doctor as a paid consultant who is there to help you get to the level of success you want to achieve in a safe and healthy manner. All highly successful people pay consultants to help them to be successful. No one gets to operate at top levels without help.
- You have someone who is on your side, and wants you to be healthy. Sometimes family members and friends can try and sabotage you out of jealousy or fear of change. Your doctor is someone who always has your best interest in mind. If you're happy and healthy, then you doctor has done his/her job.
As a given, I am referring to good doctors, doctors and medical professionals that make you feel like you are getting healthier and better. Just because someone has a medical degree doesn't mean that they are a good physician.
If you don't like your current doctor or don't think they are effective, then find another doctor. If you have doubts about your doctor's advice, go get a second opinion. There is nothing wrong with getting "back up" consultation. Trust that nagging voice in your gut. You and your doctor should have a synergistic relationship. When you do, going to the Doc's office can be a pleasurable and helpful experience.
