Comrade GoGo's story:
When I graduated from college in 1999, the first thing I did was move to New York City. For the next two years I was thin, but not for healthy reasons; I was broke and didn't eat well, and I took up a self-destructive way of life, pretending I'd found freedom when inside me there existed a bottomless craving.
Eventually I broke away from that
lifestyle when I discovered a new kind of excess in training for a marathon.
Although I attained a fit body, my mind was reeling as I tried to get a handle
on the sickening lurch of 9/11, the disastrous end of a relationship, and the
debt that I'd accrued. Life became a bit challenging and my weight rose...
...I've had it with overeating to fill the void ...
I moved to the suburbs to save money, but paid for it by commuting hours a day. I ate my way through the train rides and work days, gaining thirty pounds. I avoided shopping and mirrors, and tried to change, but I couldn't seem to find another way to cope.
This set a pattern that endured through my mid-to-late twenties, a time when I relocated ceaselessly in an attempt to chase down happiness. Through it all, my weight steadily rose. At one point, I even stayed at an adult weight-loss facility, but my dieting efforts always came to naught. I could live with the intense restrictions for only so long before rubber-banding back with a vengeance. Eventually I reached my highest weight, 195 pounds.
At the age of 30, I'm done punishing myself and I've had it with overeating to fill the void; I'm also finished with starvation diets and extreme exercise regimens. After a few months of flirtation, I've gotten down to the business of dropping one-third of my body weight with the help of Weight Watchers, common sense, and my online comrades.
