Instead of battling with your Inner Resistance Monster to make those healthier lifestyle changes he/she is roadblocking you from making, why not try making friends with your IR Monster. You know that saying, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Or, if you can't beat 'em, try and understand 'em. Perhaps you can create more harmony between the two of you. Here's some ideas:
- Have a conversation with your IR Monster. Pick one specific change you've been trying to make yet keep getting sidetracked or derailed, and ask your IR Monster why he/she is doing their best to roadblock you. Then listen.
- Think of 2 ways you and your IR Monster can act as a team. There are always to create win/win situations for two parties even though there might not seem like there is anything totally clear on the surface.
- Create a 3-item action list of things related to a life change you want to make yet only require you to only step no more than 20% out of your comfort zone. Baby steps towards your goal is better than no movement at all.
- Consider the fact that perhaps your IR Monster is actually on your side. Perhaps the procrastination and resistance is a sign that your heart really isn't into the change you want to make, or that you are making the change for someone else rather than yourself.
- Compliment your IR Monster for a job well done. You know flattery can get you everywhere and break down walls.
Here's tiny changes I did last week:
- This wasn't small, but I went completely off line for 3-1/2 days. No internet at all during that time, and I learned so much about my current insomnia issues.
- One day, I didn't want to work out, so I compromised and told myself that if I went I could get a chocolate cupcake I was craving if I did 45 minutes of cardio. I did go to the gym, and afterwards I had no craving for that cupcake anymore. My psyche just needed to know that it was allowed the option.
