When is it time to stop blogging about your weight loss?
Last week, one of my very favorite bloggers, Katieo of Sister Skinny announced that she reached her mission to get into a size 6. Via video, she even took us to the store to watch her pick out a pair of jeans. Like many in her audience, I cheered with excitement for her reaching her goal. It was thrilling to see that look of sheer happiness in her face, and what was fantastic was that the happiness was more of one of accomplishing a goal and creating a healthier life than "hey look I'm skinnier now." Katieo has much to be proud of.
But, now that the mission has been accomplished Sister Skinny, the blog, is to be no more. Katieo and her sister Molly who's 5 months pregnant have decided to stop posting. We'll still see them around the blogosphere, but as visitors rather than hosts.
Initially, I was shocked by the announcement and here's why...
Sister Skinny was a blog I delightfully looked forward to visiting
every week. It almost felt like finding out that one of my favorite
cafes shut down because the owner decided to go travel around the
world. On one hand, you're thrilled for the owner because
they are happy, but then selfishly you think, so where am I gonna hang
out now? I loved this place. I've even started to experience some
withdrawl pains. I even do blog drive-bys to see if perhaps the sisters
have changed their mind.
However, when I look at the bigger picture, at some point there has to come a time where you stop talking about your weight loss, where you stop focusing all your attention on your body, and where you decide that it's time to talk about or go do other things. Talking about weight loss for years on end can become monotonous and can start making you one dimensional kind of like those people who can only talk about their jobs or parents who can only talk about kid stuff. Interesting people are multi-faceted. And, if you are going to stop a blog, reaching a milestone goal is the perfect time to do it.
...I've been blogging about weight loss and body image
for over 2-1/2 years now ...
In January when I got
to my 25lb weight loss goal, I announced that I would no longer focus
on talking about my body measurements or what I was doing to lose
weight. I'd keep people abreast of my maintenance and things like
gaining weight because of insomnia, but I would no longer report about
how many calories I burned or ate, or what my measurements were.
I did this mainly because it was a personal lesson for me to strengthen things about myself that don't center around what I weigh or
what size I wear. I've been blogging about weight loss and body image
for over 2-1/2 years now, and I wonder really how much longer I can do
it because you can only write so many posts about ways to blast the
muffin top, or diet foods that contain high fructose corn syrup. It's
like the women's magazines, most articles are just recycled versions of
the same story.
Also, blogging in general is tough work especially if you want to
make money at it. You have to blog constantly if
you want to keep your Google rankings and traffic high, and that can
create enormous stress and pressure. For me, blogging has even led to insomnia.
For others, you stop and ask yourself things like, "Is this worth it?
Do I enjoy doing this? Is this what I really want to do?" It is a lot
to ponder.
I applaud Sister Skinny and believe that the ladies will be
successful and happy wherever life takes them. I tip my hat too to
anyone else who has blogged for a long time about their own weight loss
journey or any kind of healing journey and decided to stop posting
because it was time to move on. How about any of you still blogging,
have you thought about ending your blog?
